Alexander Perue Facing Several Charges in Stolen Vehicle Investigation
At 3:40 PM on June 6, 2023, a 2015 blue Mercedes sedan was reported as stolen to APD. The vehicle had been parked in front of a residence on the 7200-block of Russell Circle. The complainant stated there were no keys inside the car at the time of the theft; it was unknown if the Mercedes was locked or not.
At 1:53 AM on June 7th, a mid-shift officer saw a driver passed out behind the wheel of a Mercedes parked at the dead end of E 20th Avenue near Karluk Street. A plate was not visible, but the Mercedes matched the description of the one that had been reported as stolen one day prior. A backup officer arrived; they blocked in the Mercedes with their patrol vehicles. Prior to the occupant waking up, the officers were able to confirm the VIN on the Mercedes matched that of the stolen car.
After additional units arrived and assisted with the vehicle block, an officer shone a spotlight into the Mercedes which woke up the adult male driver, later identified as 30-year-old Alexander M. Perue. Perue began reaching around inside the car; he was given commands to stop and put his hands up. Perue put the vehicle in gear and attempted to drive out of the block. When that was unsuccessful, Perue opened the driver’s door and fled on foot. Officers gave chase and caught Perue a short distance away. Perue was handcuffed without further incident.
Officers noticed signs of drug-induced impairment. Perue was transported to the Anchorage Jail where Standardized Field Sobriety Tests (SFSTs) were administered. Perue then provided a breath sample showing his breath-alcohol content was zero. Perue’s blood was drawn after a search warrant was obtained.
Other officers remained on E 20th to process the stolen car. Subsequent to receiving permission from the registered owner, the Mercedes was searched, and several items were seized for evidence to include drugs.
Alexander Perue was remanded at the jail on his four outstanding warrants (two misdemeanors and two felonies). He was additionally charged with Fail to Stop, Misconduct Involving a Controlled Substance V, Resisting, Theft II, Vehicle Theft I, and Driving under the Influence.
