Arrest by K9: Checkmate Dr and 41st Ave

At 12:42 AM on Oct. 27, 2024, an officer from Mid-shift Patrol attempted to conduct a traffic stop near the intersection of Abbott and Sandlewood. A black SUV was driving recklessly, weaving through lanes and almost hit several vehicles.

Officers next spotted the SUV driving recklessly near the intersection of Tudor and Old Seward. However, the SUV continued to evade them, driving to the vicinity of Checkmate and 41st. In that area, an officer utilized police vehicle tactics to disable the SUV. Once the vehicle was immobilized, the driver of the SUV, later identified as 37-year-old Gary Kelso, fled on foot, prompting the deployment of K9 Ray, who successfully apprehended him.

Both Kelso and the officer who disabled the fleeing vehicle sustained minor upper body injuries in the incident and were transported to the hospital and were later released. K9 Ray was uninjured.

Kelso was remanded to the Anchorage Correctional Complex (ACC) for failing to stop at the direction of an officer, assault in the third degree, Driving Under the Influence (DUI), resisting arrest and reckless driving.
