Cody Riggs Apprehended by K9 Jack after committing several felony crimes

On January 26, 2023 at 09:27PM Anchorage Police Department dispatch received a call regarding a person slumped over the wheel in a vehicle near Bannister Drive and East Fireweed Lane. Officers with swing shift patrol, along with K9, responded and located the vehicle which was occupied by a male driver who was asleep at the wheel while the vehicle was running. A computer check discovered that the license plate on the vehicle was listed as a stolen license plate.

Officers used vehicle tactics and blocked the vehicle in. When the suspect, 29-year-old Cody Riggs, woke up he attempted to push his way out of the vehicle block and was unsuccessful. Riggs then exited the vehicle and ran from Officers. Officers gave Riggs a K9 warning, which he ignored, and continued to flee on foot from the scene. K9 Jack was released and subsequently apprehended Riggs. Officers were able to take Riggs into custody without further incident.

Officers on scene recognized the vehicle Riggs was operating as a vehicle that eluded another Officer at approximately 8:30PM the same evening in the area of 14th Avenue and Gambell Street. Officers learned the vehicle was listed as stolen. A computer check revealed that Riggs had an outstanding felony probation violation warrant and a misdemeanor warrant for original charges of eluding, reckless endangerment, and resisting arrest.

Riggs was transported to a local hospital for treatment of the dog bite. Riggs was then transported to APD Headquarters where he was interviewed by Detectives.  Once the Detectives completed their interview, Riggs was remanded to then Anchorage Jail for his warrants, resisting arrest, and vehicle theft.

None of the Officers involved nor K9 JACK were injured during the incident.
