Collision Investigation at Gambell St/E 13th Av

At 9:38 PM on August 15, 2024, Anchorage Police responded to the intersection of E 13th Avenue and Gambell Street regarding a vehicle collision.  Initial indications are that a van, heading southbound on Gambell, was stopped for the red light at E 13th.  Once the light changed, and the van began moving, a southbound motorcycle struck the back of the van.  The adult male motorcyclist, who was not wearing a helmet, was transported to the hospital for treatment of what are believed to be life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the van has stayed at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.  The Major Collision Investigations Unit (MCIU) will be responding to process the scene.  While this occurs, 13th Avenue will be shut down in both directions at the intersection.  All southbound Gambell, except for the far-left hand lane, will also be closed.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.  No charges have been filed.
