Dylan Atchak charged in a shots-fired investigation
At 2:25 AM on June 22, 2022, mid-shift officers, who were on the 5000-block of Taku Drive, notified Dispatch that they had heard gunshots fired from somewhere nearby. A few minutes later, the officers reported hearing additional shots being fired near the McCarrey and Glenn Highway overpass. Almost immediately after hearing the second set of shots, officers saw two females and a male walking on the bike trail that leads from McCarrey Street to Taku Drive. Upon seeing the police, the people turned around and walked away. Additional responding officers almost immediately contacted the two females, but the male refused to stop.
Officers caught up to the male in a residential parking lot on the 100-block of McCarrey Street. The man, later identified as 26-year-old Dylan O. Atchak, was slowly backing away from the officers and was mostly non-compliant with the officers’ instructions. The officers told Atchak about the shots fired call they were investigating; Atchak responded by stating he did not have a weapon on his person. Officers could see a bulge in Atchak’s clothing that was clearly the outline of a handgun. Officers repeatedly told Atchak to place his hands above his head, however he kept dropping his hands to his waistband where the gun was concealed. Eventually Atchak did put his hands on his head at which time officers went hands on and placed Atchak into handcuffs. During the pat search, officers pulled a handgun out of Atchak’s clothing near his waistline where the bulge had been.
Atchak initially refused to identify himself. He later gave officers an ID number that was not his own. Atchak provided two more ID numbers, both of which did not belong to him. Inside Atchak’s wallet officers located two state-issued ID cards that were for other people. Another officer began questioning Atchak; ultimately Atchak gave his real name which officers verified.
A computer check revealed that Atchak was a convicted felon and was therefore not allowed to be in possession of a handgun. It was additionally discovered that Atchak had Conditions of Release related to two other open criminal cases.
Dylan Atchak was transported to the Anchorage Police Department for questioning by detectives. Afterwards he was remanded at the Anchorage Jail on the charges of Misconduct Involving a Weapon V – Fail to Inform, False Information, two counts of Theft II – Access Device, Misconduct Involving a Weapon III – Felon in Possession, two counts of Violate Conditions of Release, and two counts of Misconduct Involving a Weapon IV – Firing Recklessly.
No injuries were reported. The two females who had been with Atchak were not charged.
