Fatal Traffic Investigation at Mile 103 of Seward Highway

Update 07/12/23:

The victim has been identified as 78-year-ol Angel Rivera.

Next of kin notifications procedures have been completed.

Update 7:35pm:

Correction: The motorhome traveling northbound had one adult female driver and one juvenile passenger transported by AFD medics to a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries. We previously released it was a male driver.

One lane has been reopened. APD will be alternating northbound and southbound traffic through this one lane.

At 3:06 PM on July 10, 2023, Anchorage Police responded to Mile 103 of the New Seward Highway regarding a two-vehicle crash with injuries. Initial indications are that two motorhomes, one traveling south and one traveling north, collided head on.

 The adult male driver of the motorhome traveling southbound, and an adult female passenger, were transported by medics with the Anchorage Fire Department to a local hospital where the adult male was later declared deceased.  The female passenger received treatment for non-life threatening injuries. The motorhome traveling northbound had one adult female driver and one juvenile passenger transported by AFD medics to a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries. Two passengers in the motorhome traveling northbound only reported minor injuries.

 The Major Collision Investigations Unit (MCIU) has responded to process the scene. While they do so, both North and South lanes of the highway are shut down. Please avoid the area and revise your travel plans accordingly.

 The victim’s name will be released upon completion of next-of-kin notification procedures. The investigation is ongoing; no charging decisions have been made.

 APD would also like to thank the numerous citizens that stopped to give aid after the collision.
