Frankie Atoigue Facing Weapon and Drug Charges

At 1:32 PM on May 16, 2024, a loaded handgun was reported as stolen to APD.  Initial indications were that the handgun may have been stolen from a safe by an acquaintance of the owner’s house sitter.  It was relayed to APD the suspect’s name may be “Frank.”

At 1:50 AM on May 21st a mid-shift patrol officer saw a male, later identified as 48-year-old Frankie S. Atoigue, riding his bicycle in the streets before meeting up with a female and then going with her to an alleyway where unoccupied vehicles were parked.  The officer watched Atoigue try the door handle on one of the parked cars near E 14th Avenue and Fairbanks Street.  When Atoigue saw the officer driving by, he removed his hand from the door.

The officer circled around and parked in front of the SUV Atoigue had been trying to open. The officer saw Atoigue and the female hiding in the back seat of the SUV.  Once a backup officer arrived, both individuals were directed to exit the vehicle.  Atoigue was asked if he had any weapons on him; he replied he did not.  During the pat search several items were seized as evidence from Atoigue’s clothing to include powder fentanyl.

A search of the SUV the two had been hiding in revealed a handgun which had been discarded where Atoigue had been sitting.  A computer check of the serial number revealed the gun was the same one that had been reported as stolen five days prior.  During his subsequent interview with detectives, it was determined Atoigue was the same “Frank” suspected of stealing the gun from the residential safe.

Frankie Atoigue was remanded at the Anchorage Correctional Complex on the charges of Misconduct Involving a Weapon V, Misconduct Involving a Weapon II – Drug Crime, Misconduct Involving a Controlled Substance II – Manufacture/Deliver, and Theft II – Firearms.

Neither Atoigue, nor the female he was with, had permission to be inside the SUV they were found hiding in.  There was no sign of forced entry into the vehicle; all indications are that the SUV had been left unlocked.

The female Atoigue was with was not charged.
