Homicide; The top of Mile High Road in Eagle River

Update on 3/8/15:

Anchorage police have charged and arrested the suspect accused of shooting multiple occupants inside of a vehicle that was located at the top of Mile High Road in Eagle River near Brownie and Barclay Drive, killing a female occupant, and injuring two others early this morning.

The suspect, identified as 32-year-old James Andrew Baker, has been charged with Murder 1, two counts of Attempted Murder 1, and one count of Assault 3. His conditions have been set at no bail.

The female who was found deceased inside of the vehicle has been identified as 56-year-old June Mary McCarr. Her next-of-kin have been notified. The two other occupants of the vehicle who were struck by bullets were transported to the hospital; they are in stable condition.

A preliminary investigation of the incident revealed that the vehicle owned by Baker was driven to the top of Mile High Road with six people inside. The vehicle was parked near Brownie and Barclay Drive where the occupants used drugs inside of the vehicle. For an undetermined reason, Baker produced a firearm and started firing at the other occupants inside of the vehicle. All the occupants fled the scene on foot, except for McCarr who was found deceased by police inside of the vehicle.

Police believe that Baker may have been picked up by a citizen in the Eagle River Road area around 6:30 a.m. this morning and the driver dropped Baker off at the Tesoro Gas Station located at 12139 Old Glenn Hwy. The vehicle in which Baker received a ride from was described as possibly a newer model dark red or maroon SUV.  Police are hoping to contact the driver of the vehicle that gave Baker a ride and are asking that person to call police at 786-8900 (press “0”) to speak with a Dispatcher who will connect them with a detective.

This case remains under investigation and anyone with additional information is asked to call police or to provide a crime tip anonymously by calling Anchorage Crime Stoppers at 561-STOP.
