Update 3/29/19:
Last month, Detectives received a tip with new information about this investigation. As they began to investigate further, they received additional information and new leads. Detectives aggressively followed up on each lead and were able to successfully identify the suspect. He was arrested this afternoon and transported to jail.

The suspect has been identified as Quennel Avery (34 years old). He faces charges of Murder 1 and Murder 2. He was the driver of the vehicle and the shooter.

This is another example of why it’s extremely important when you see or hear something suspicious, to say something. APD is grateful to the people who came forward with what they knew. Without their help, detectives would not have been able to solve this crime and help bring closure to the victim’s family and friends.

Update 4/20/18 2:30 p.m.:
Homicide detectives are still asking for the public’s help in locating a silver or gray Chevy Trailblazer that was seen in the area of 4th and D Street early on New Year’s Day when Timothy Smith was shot and killed. The Trailblazer is missing the passenger side half of its front bumper.

Anchorage Police have identified the victim of this morning’s homicide as 39-year-old Timothy Smith. Officers are asking anyone who witnessed the shooting at 4 and D Street to please contact Homicide Detectives. APD is also wanting to talk with the occupants of a sliver Chevy Trail Blazer that was in the area at the time the shooting occurred (photos attached). At 12:16am APD responded to a shots fire call in the area of 4th Ave and D Street.

Officers arrived on scene to find one adult male victim with multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

This is an active investigation with no suspect information to release. Officers are still on scene at 4th and D Street, please avoid the area.
