At 1:51 AM on March 13, 2022, a mid-shift officer initiated a traffic stop on a silver Chevy Impala which had a burned-out headlight.  When the officer activated his patrol vehicle’s emergency lights, the Chevy’s driver eluded by running through a red light near Arctic Boulevard and W 36th Avenue.  The officer did not pursue.

A few hours later, at 5:09 AM, the same officer saw the Chevy being driven near W 32nd Avenue and C Street. The officer followed the Chevy until another unit arrived on scene.  The officer initiated a traffic stop on Cheechako Street near W 31st Avenue; the two officers blocked in the Chevy with their patrol vehicles.  The Chevy’s driver, later identified as 34-year-old Miguel J. Wood, put the Chevy in reverse and began to back up.  The officers tightened up the block and then contacted Wood.

Wood followed the officers’ instructions and was taken into custody without further incident.  A computer check revealed that Wood had three outstanding felony warrants.  Police also smelled a strong odor of alcohol coming from Wood’s person.  Once they arrived at the jail, Wood declined to participate in Standardized Field Sobriety Tests (SFSTs).  He also refused to provide a breath sample. 

Wood was remanded at the Anchorage Jail on his warrants.  He was additionally charged with Reckless Driving, Fail to Stop, Refusal, and Driving under the Influence.

The front seat passenger in the Chevy with Wood was identified as 34-year-old Marlene M. Ahnupkana.  She was remanded at Hiland Correctional on an outstanding felony warrant.  The third adult occupant in the vehicle was released without being charged.
