It had been reported to Dispatch that an adult male had been threatening a group of people with a firearm and the group found safety in a nearby building.  The adult male suspect was reported to be riding a bike.

When officers arrived at the scene, they contacted the complainants who identified the suspect outside the business. Officers exited the business and followed the suspect, instructing him to stop. The suspect was not compliant and continued to flee. When officers caught up to the suspect, he had gotten off his bike. Officers directed the suspect to drop his weapon, however, the suspect fired a round in the direction of an officer. At least one officer returned fire, resulting in shots being exchanged. As a result, the adult male suspect was shot in both the upper and lower body. He was transported to a local hospital with what are believed to be life-threatening injuries.

This shooting was captured on body worn camera and patrol dash cameras.

The Crime Scene Team has responded to process the site; a drone may be utilized.

Per policy the State’s Office of Special Prosecutions (OSP) will review the officers’ use of force and determine whether it was legally justified. Once that has been completed, APD Internal Affairs will review the officers’ actions to confirm whether there was any violation of policy. As per APD practice the officers will be placed on four days of administrative leave. Their names will be released publicly 72-hours after the incident.
