Officer involved shooting investigation; Fred Meyer at 7701 Debarr Road

UPDATE: At 11:19pm Wednesday November 15th, the Anchorage Police Department’s Investigative Support Unit was attempting to serve multiple felony warrants on Thomas Barclay. Barclay had multiple outstanding warrants;

  • Felony assault and driving with a revoked license,

  • Felony obstruction of a court order on drug procession charges,

  • Felony obstruction of a court order on a felony DUI, driving with a revoked license, misconduct involving a weapon, reckless driving, and failure to stop,

  • And a misdemeanor obstruction of a court order for violating conditions of release.

Officers contacted Barclay in the parking lot of Fred Meyer on Muldoon Rd. Barclay attempted to elude officers, but they were able to pin his vehicle on all sides. Officers shot a less lethal round into Barclay’s vehicle to break the back window to create a way for Barclay to safely exit the vehicle at the direction of the officers. Barclay then produced a gun and pointed it at officers. Officers opened fire killing Barclay.

APD initially believed Barclay shot at least two rounds at officers. As investigators began working the case we have not yet been able to confirm how many shots Barclay fired as we have not yet finished processing the scene.

The APD crime scene investigators responded to the scene. The case has been given to the Office of Special Prosecution for review. All officers involved has been placed on mandatory administrative leave and their names will be released in 72 hours.
