Anchorage Grand Jury Indicts Kainoa Duarte-Borden for Murder

Update on 7/8/22:

From the Attorney General's Office:

(Anchorage, AK) – On July 7, 2022, an Anchorage grand jury indicted twenty year-old Kainoa Duarte-Borden for two counts of Murder in the Second Degree for the June 25, 2022, drive-by shooting death of Christopher Shaw that occurred at the Holiday Stationstore in Mountain View. Duarte-Borden faces a sentence of up to 99 years if convicted at trial.

The charges are only allegations and are not evidence of guilt. The defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial at which the prosecution must prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Duarte-Borden is currently in the custody of the Department of Corrections. His bail is set at $100,000 cash performance bond, $100,000 cash appearance bond, house arrest on an electronic monitoring device, and the court must approve a third-party custodian to monitor him.

Update on 6/29/22:

One adult male and one juvenile male have been taken into custody and questioned by detectives for their involvement in Saturday morning’s homicide.

20-year-old Kainoa Duarte-Borden was remanded at the Anchorage Jail on the charges of Murder 1 and Murder II.

Charges for the 15-year-old male suspect were referred to the Alaska Division of Juvenile Justice; he was remanded to McLaughlin Youth Center. Due to the suspect’s age, his name cannot be released by authorities.

Homicide detectives and the APD Investigative Support Unit (ISU) thank the public for their assistance in locating the suspects.

The victim has been identified as 26-year-old Christopher Shaw.

Anchorage Police Department homicide detectives still need the public's assistance in identifying this individual (see picture) that they believe was involved in this morning’s homicide.

Update—3:50 PM—06/25/22

The adult male victim has died since a result of his injuries. This case is now being investigated as a homicide. The investigation is ongoing and more information will be released as the investigation allows.

Original—3:22 AM—06/25/22

At 02:01 AM on June 25, 2022, officers assigned to Mid Shift Patrol responded to the 4600 Block of Mountain View Drive in reference to a shooting.

Upon arrival, Officers and medics located one adult male victim outside on the ground with a gunshot wound to the upper chest. The victim was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. The circumstances surrounding the shooting, including the motive and the relationship between the victim and suspect, are still under investigation.

Please avoid the area and follow the officers’ instructions if you need to be in the vicinity.

There have been no arrests at this time. Anyone with information regarding this incident, that have not already spoken to the police, is asked to call Police Dispatch at 3-1-1 (Option 1).
