Speed Enforcement on Glenn Hwy, Minnesota, and New Seward Hwy
It seems early in the season, but the roads are dry, and the feet are heavy. However, dry roads don’t mean the speed limit signs are merely suggestions, they’re still the law. If we see you ignore those limits, no matter what lane you’re in, we will be pulling you over and handing you a reminder in the form of a traffic ticket. So, leave your lead foot at home and keep the pedal off the metal.
In the spirit of giving a head’s up, we thought we’d let you know that we have extra traffic details* from April 15-30, 2022. So, if you are speeding on the Glenn Highway, New Seward Highway, or Minnesota Drive, be prepared to meet us in person.
In addition to our regular Impaired Driving Enforcement Unit’s efforts (IDEU) we have even more officers working these details* for the sole purpose of catching folks who choose to drive recklessly by speeding, or impaired either due to alcohol, drugs, or a combination of both.
Operating under the influence threatens everyone on the road. Designate a sober driver or call a cab. Never let your friends drive under the influence. Remember our REDDI program – Report Every Dangerous Driver Immediately by calling 9-1-1. If you see someone driving in such a manner that is likely to cause injury to either themselves or others – please tell us as quickly as possible.
Lastly, please remember to follow the MOVE OVER LAW, Alaska State Statute 28.35.185, if you see any first responder vehicle or tow truck pulled over on the side of the road, with its emergency lights activated, then you must move over and vacate the lane closest to those vehicles. If you cannot do so safely then you must slow to a reasonable and prudent speed. We know the flashing lights are pretty, and the urge to know the tea is irresistible, but help us keep our officers and our community safe, and just scootch over.
*This special speed enforcement is grant-funded through the Alaska Highway Safety Office and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The grants cover the overtime hours for these additional officers and speed measuring equipment for the detail.
