Vehicle vs Bicyclist Hit-and-Run Investigation on Arctic Boulevard

Update on 7/10/24:

Traffic investigators determined the involved driver was 28-year-old Aaron M. VanValen.  On July 5, 2024, a warrant for VanValen was obtained for one count of Leaving the Scene of an Accident and one count of Failure to Render Aid.  On July 10, 2024, VanValen turned himself in; he was subsequently remanded at the Anchorage Correctional Complex on that warrant.

Update on 4/15/24:

Traffic investigators have identified and located both the involved vehicle and driver.  No charges have been filed; the investigation is ongoing.

Original on 4/9/24:

At 9:57 PM on April 8, 2024, Anchorage Police responded to the area of Arctic Boulevard and Highlander Drive regarding a vehicle versus bicyclist hit-and-run collision.  Initial indications are that an adult male bicyclist was travelling in the roadway, northbound on Arctic, when he was struck from behind by a vehicle.  The driver left the scene without notifying emergency services.

The bicyclist was transported to a hospital by AFD Medics with what are believed to be life-threatening injuries.

There is no suspect description available for release as of now.  Anyone with information regarding this incident, to included surveillance footage of the area, is asked to call Police Dispatch at 3-1-1 (option #1) or 907-786-8900 (press “0”).  You may provide information anonymously online at www.AnchorageCrimeStoppers.com.

The Major Collision Investigations Unit (MCIU) responded and processed the scene.  All roadways are now open.
