Zero Tolerance for Fireworks

Joint message from APD Chief Kerle and AFD Chief Schrage:

It’s the 4th of July Weekend! While you’re out and celebrating America’s birthday, please remember we are currently experiencing very high fire danger, and open burning is prohibited. The Anchorage Fire Department has responded to many different wildland fires in the recent days and weeks, and large fires across the state have reduced the availability of fire teams to assist AFD in the event of a large fire. This weekend, remember to be smart and keep in mind that fireworks are illegal within the Municipality of Anchorage. This is your warning this year; we have a zero-tolerance policy.  If you’re caught with them, we’ll take them away and write you a $300 ticket on the spot. A large fire under current conditions could exceed the fire department’s ability to suppress a fire. Fireworks and open burning in these conditions are irresponsible, dangerous, and illegal. Do your part to help keep Anchorage safe, and report any illegal burning or fireworks by calling 3-1-1.

*Anchorage Municipal Code 14.70.180 covers the use of Fireworks.
