Allister Ekstrom facing several charges stemming from DUI incident

At 4:40 AM on December 3, 2022, a mid-shift patrol officer initiated a traffic stop at W 36th Avenue and Indiana Street on a BMW that had illegal window tinting and an obscured license plate.  The BMW’s driver initially yielded to the side of the road but then took off at a high rate of speed once the officer exited his patrol vehicle.  The officer did not pursue.  A few minutes later, at 4:44 AM, a citizen called APD Dispatch and reported that a BMW had been driven up on the sidewalk near Spenard Road and W 36th Avenue before striking a fire hydrant.  The original officer responded to the intersection and saw the BMW crashed up against the hydrant.  The driver’s side door was open, and the vehicle was empty.  The officer could smell a strong odor of marijuana emanating from the BMW.

A second officer responding to the area saw the suspect, later identified as 19-year-old Allister K. I. Ekstrom, running in an alley between Oregon Drive and Lois Drive.  The officer gave Ekstrom commands to stop which Ekstrom ignored.  A third responding officer saw Ekstrom running near Spenard Road and Oregon Drive.  That officer also gave commands which Ekstrom complied with; Ekstrom was taken into custody without further incident.  Officers noticed Ekstrom displaying signs of impairment.

Ekstrom was transported to the Anchorage Jail for processing.  Ekstrom refused to participate in Standardized Field Sobriety Tests (SFSTs) but he did provide a breath sample showing his breath alcohol content was more than one and a half times the legal limit.  Ekstrom was remanded on an existing warrant.  He was additionally charged with Resisting, Fail to Stop, Driving under the Influence, Leaving the Scene of an Accident, Misconduct Involving a Controlled Substance II, and two counts of Violate Conditions of Release.

While searching the BMW Ekstrom had been driving, officers seized a white substance that field-tested positive for cocaine and a baggie containing several pills.

No injuries were reported.  A representative from the water company did respond regarding the broken fire hydrant which sustained significant damage.  The BMW was impounded from the scene.
