APD Continues Kelly Hunt Investigation, Travels to Shaktoolik with U.S. Marshals Service Support
ANCHORAGE, AK — October 7, 2026 — Anchorage Police Department (APD) detectives are continuing to investigate the death of 19-year-old Kelly Hunt. On September 24, 2026, APD detectives traveled to Shaktoolik, Alaska which is Hunt's home village. The aircraft and personnel support was provided from the U.S. Marshals Service. (APD Case No. 26-1122).
APD detectives are still working to understand the circumstances that led to her death. Hunt was staying in Anchorage while on her way to Alaska Christian College in Soldotna, Alaska. She was last seen in Anchorage on January 7, 2026, and was reported missing to APD on January 11, 2026. Her body was found in Anchorage on April 20, 2026. Earlier this year, the Alaska State Medical Examiner Office has determined the cause of death to be hypothermia due to exposure to extreme cold while intoxicated.
Because Hunt grew up in Shaktoolik, detectives believe people who knew her may have information about her life and contacts before her death. APD partnered with the U.S. Marshals Service, which provided a pilot, an aircraft, and a deputy U.S. marshal to make the trip possible. APD detectives and a deputy U.S. marshal spent the day in Shaktoolik interviewing community members in person to help build a clearer picture of the events before her death.
