Daniel Paul Charged in DV Related Burglary
At 2:12 PM on January 3, 2024, Anchorage Police responded to the 7800-block of Eastbrook Drive for a residential burglary in progress. Initial indications are that 41-year-old Daniel Paul entered the home which was in violation of a served Domestic Violence Protective Order (DVRO). The residents of the home were away at the time; Paul’s presence was discovered by the dog sitter who contacted police. It appears Paul gained access by breaking a window. Additional evidence discovered indicated Paul had been watching the home from the outside for an extended period of time.
Several officers responded and a perimeter was formed. After receiving no response from Paul, officers entered and searched the home. They found Paul hiding in the attic which he refused to exit. Members of the Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) arrived; their attempt to talk Paul out was unsuccessful. After multiple less lethal warnings were given and went unheeded, pepper ball was released into the attic space. Paul did not exit. A K9 handler lifted K9 Rylin up the ladder with the intention of deploying the dog into the attic to apprehend Paul. The deployment was unsuccessful due to Paul pushing the dog’s face and kicking at her (while the dog was still in her handler’s arms) so the dog could not gain footing on the attic floor. During that physical altercation, the K9 handler’s hand was visibly injured. K9 Rylin also cried out during the struggle; she did not require medical attention afterwards. Eventually officers were able to go hands on and pull Paul down from the attic.
Once he was handcuffed, Paul received medical attention for the pepper spray exposure. He was subsequently transported to the Anchorage Police Department for questioning by detectives. At the conclusion of the interview, Daniel Paul was remanded at the Anchorage Correctional Complex on the charges of Criminal Mischief IV, Resisting, Harming a Police Dog II, Stalking II, and Burglary I.
