Darren Babb facing multiple charges after striking another vehicle in traffic

At 4:38 AM on April 3, 2022, an adult male called APD Dispatch to report that someone was chasing him in traffic and ramming his vehicle.  Initial indications are that the male victim received a call from a female friend.  The female stated she was at a residence with 20-year-old Darren O. Babb, and due to Babb’s behavior, she did not feel safe.  The male victim responded to the residence and picked up the female per her request.  Babb went outside and got into a verbal confrontation with the male. 

After the male and female drove away together, Babb got into his Toyota truck and followed the victim.  Babb rammed the victim’s Jeep more than once with his pickup.  The victim called APD Dispatch while driving towards the JBER gate.  Babb continued to follow the victim recklessly.  As the victim and Babb pulled up to JBER, APD also arrived on scene.  When the officer saw the Toyota, the officer activated his patrol vehicle’s emergency lights and siren.  Babb drove straight towards the officer; the officer had to make an evasive maneuver to avoid being struck.  Due to Babb’s dangerous driving behavior, the officer did not pursue.  The officer aired a locate over the radio.

Other officers located Babb driving on the 5900 block of E 6th Avenue.  They were able to block in the Toyota and take Babb into custody without further incident. During their interaction with Babb, officers noticed signs of impairment.  Babb refused to answer any questions or participate in Standardized Field Sobriety Tests (SFSTs).  The decision was made to charge Babb with Driving Under the Influence; he was transported to the Anchorage Jail for further processing.  Once there, Babb provided a breath sample which showed his breath alcohol content was more that one and a half times the legal limit.

Darren Babb was remanded at the Anchorage Jail on his two outstanding warrants.  He was additionally charged with Reckless Driving, Fail to Stop, two counts of Assault III, Leaving the Scene of an Accident, DUI, Criminal Mischief III, and Criminal Mischief IV.  Babb was cited for Driving While License Revoked and Failure to Obey Citations (he was on Scofflaw for multiple unpaid cites).

The victim’s Jeep had visible damage to its rear bumper.  The Toyota Babb was driving had a missing left front tire; Babb had been driving on the rim.  The Toyota also had front end damage.  At some point during the incident, Babb struck a pole outside the JBER gate with his Toyota.  JBER Police handled the report regarding the damaged pole.

No one was injured.
