Gerald Kavanagh and Tracy Powell charged in shots fired investigation

At 6:35 PM on August 9, 2022, Anchorage Police responded to the area of Dimond Boulevard and King Street regarding two males in the bushes shooting at passing vehicles.  One caller reported his vehicle’s front passenger window had been shot out.  Officers located the two men in the bushes near the railroad overpass.  As officers initially drove into the area, one of the males pointed his gun at the police. The officers thought the gun was real which put them in fear of immediate harm.

As the officers approached the two men the officers gave several commands.  The suspects complied and were taken into custody.  Through the investigation it was determined that 19-year-old Gerald J. Kavanagh was armed with a pellet gun and CO2 canisters.  It was determined that he was the one who had shot the weapon at passing vehicles and had pointed the gun at officers.  Kavanagh was remanded at the Anchorage Jail on the charges of Criminal Mischief IV, Misconduct Involving a Weapon IV – fire gun by highway, and three counts of Assault III.

The second suspect, 24-year-old Tracy B. Powell, was found to have meth on his person during the pat search. He also had an air pistol in his possession but there is no indication he fired it.  Powell was charged with Misconduct Involving a Controlled Substance V.

There were no injuries.
