Homicide; 700-block W 4th Avenue

On 01/24/022 APD Patrol Officers were called to a local hospital regarding suspicious circumstances and injuries to a male patient who had suffered life threatening injuries a few days prior.

The initial investigation discovered that 44-year-old Carl McGeary had been picked up by the Anchorage Safety Patrol (ASP) outside in the 700-block of West 4th Avenue on 01/22/22. When the ASP Officers went to remove McGeary from the ASP van they discovered him unresponsive and called medics. He was then transported to a local hospital.

Detectives were assigned to the case and, after interviewing witnesses, the initial investigation revealed that McGeary was assaulted by a male outside near the 700-block of West 4th Avenue on the evening of 01/22/22.

On 01/26/22 McGreary died and it was ultimately determined that McGeary died from wounds suffered during the assault that occured on 01/22/22.

Through the investigation it was determined that 21-year-old George Murfitt was the suspect who assaulted McGeary. On 01/27/22 a search warrant was obtained and conducted at Murfitt’s residence, and he was later taken into custody. He was questioned by detectives and transported to jail.

Murfitt faces charges of Manslaughter.

Next of kin procedures have been completed.
