Homicide Investigation on the 1000-block of E 5th Avenue

Update on 8/26/24:

The victim has been identified as 48-year-old Carl Washington.  Next-of-kin notification procedures have been completed.

Update at 12:50 PM on 8/22/24:

At 10:15 AM on August 22, 2024, Anchorage Police responded to the 1000-block of E 5th Avenue regarding reports of at least one shot being fired outside at a camp.  It was relayed to Dispatch that one male had been injured in the shooting.  Upon arrival officers located the adult male victim with a wound to his upper body; he was declared deceased at the scene.

A photo of the suspect was provided to officers.  That photo was subsequently disseminated to the public.  A large perimeter was set up and a suspect search was conducted with the aid of a drone.  Ultimately the suspect was not located, and the perimeter was broken down.

The motive for the shooting, and whether the involved parties were known to one another ahead of time, are still under investigation.  Anyone with knowledge of the suspect’s current whereabouts is asked to call 9-1-1.  Anyone with information regarding the suspect’s identity (but not his current location) is asked to call APD Dispatch at 3-1-1 (option #1) or 907-786-8900 (option “0”).  You may provide information anonymously online at www.AnchorageCrimeStoppers.com.

The Crime Scene Team will be responding to process the site where the victim was found.  There will be a continued police presence in that area while that occurs.

The attached photo is of the suspect. If you see this person, please DO NOT APPROACH HIM but call 9-1-1 with his location.

Anchorage Police are investigating reports of shots fired near E 5th Avenue and Karluk Street. There is a large police presence in the area; a drone is being utilized.
