Juveniles charged in gas station burglary

At 3:15 AM on September 21, 2022, a citizen called APD Dispatch to report a possible break-in.  The citizen stated they heard glass break at the Chevron Gas Station located at 1465 W Northern Lights Boulevard.  The citizen further stated they saw someone rummaging around inside the store.  As officers were headed to the scene, it was reported that two people were leaving the area on bicycles.

Upon arrival officers saw that a large window on the south side of the gas station was shattered; it did not appear that anyone was still inside.  Police contacted the citizen witness and learned that one of the fleeing suspects was on a bike and the other was on a scooter; they were carrying a trash bag.  The officer aired that description over the radio.

Another responding officer saw two subjects in a parking lot on the 1700-block of W 32nd Avenue.  They were going through a trash bag and then began moving through the parking lot; one had a bike and the other had a scooter.  The officer kept eyes on the suspects from a distance while waiting for backup units to arrive.  The suspects traveled to a condominium parking lot on the 3000-block of Lois Drive where they hid in some bushes.  The officers announced who they were and commanded the two suspects not to move.  Both suspects began running westbound through the parking lot.  One of the males was caught quickly by other officers who were nearby.  The second suspect continued to flee on a bike but was also caught a short distance away by other responding officers.

Both juvenile male suspects were transported to the Anchorage Police Department for questioning by detectives.  It was determined that one of the juveniles was responsible for breaking a window at the same Chevron several days prior.  Both suspects were remanded at McLaughlin Youth Center (MYC); charges were forwarded to the Department of Juvenile Justice.

Officers recovered the items stolen from inside the store and returned them to the store owner.

If you see something, say something.  Anchorage Police are grateful to the citizen who called police when they saw suspicious activity, and then stayed at the scene and provided an excellent statement.
