Press Release: APD increases presence throughout city after U-MED District shooting
Last evening, Nov. 25, 2024, at approximately 10:46 PM, officers assigned to Swing and Mid-shift Patrols responded to the University Lake Park area in reference to shots fired. Upon arrival, officers learned that multiple shots were fired near the trail system. One person self-admitted to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and is reported to be in stable condition.
Patrol officers along with APD Special Operations began to search University Lake Park and adjacent trails on foot and utilized drones, casting a wide perimeter and conducting a detailed search for approximately three-and-a-half hours with more than 30 officers.
“Currently, we do not have a suspect in custody, but we are taking precautions to ensure the safety of the area while we follow the evidence,” said Deputy Chief Brian Wilson, head of APD Operations. “Anchorage residents will see an increased police presence in the U-MED District and adjoining trail systems today and through the holiday weekend.”
Additionally, officers will be actively patrolling neighborhoods, public spaces and schools in the area. APD is also coordinating with partner law enforcement agencies and security services including the Alaska State Troopers (AST), the University Police and hospital and university security forces to monitor the situation and coordinate our response efforts.
While the current information regarding the suspect is quite limited, we encourage the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities or concerns to the police immediately. Do not engage anyone who may be suspicious, call 911.
Anyone with surveillance footage of the area, or other information regarding this investigation who has not yet spoken to police, is asked to call APD Dispatch at 3-1-1 (option #1) or 907-786-8900 (option #0).
