Shawnaly Muese-Fesagaiga charged in forgery investigation.
At 10:19 AM on February 21, 2022, Anchorage Police responded to a residence on the 1800-block of Arctic Boulevard regarding a burglary that had occurred the day before. Multiple items had been stolen from the home to include a check made payable to the victim that had not yet been cashed. It is believed the burglary happened on February 20th while the victim was gone from the home. The victim had left the door to his house unlocked while he was away.
At 3:59 PM on March 4, 2022, Anchorage Police responded to First National Bank of Alaska at 8725 Old Seward Highway regarding an attempted fraud. Officers contacted a bank employee who stated 39-year-old Shawnaly I. Muese-Fesagaiga tried to open a bank account for a business using a check provided by another business. When the bank employee called the business who had supposedly written the check, the bank employee learned that same check had already been issued to another individual. While the bank employee was on the phone verifying the check’s information, Shawnaly left the building.
The responding officer called both the business that had originally issued the check, along with the person the check had legitimately been written to. The officer learned the check had been stolen during the burglary that had occurred at the check recipient’s home almost two weeks prior.
The officer received information that Shawnaly may have gone to a residence on the 4100-block of Turnagain Boulevard. Upon arrival officers saw the black GMC Yukon, that Shawnaly had gone to the bank in, parked in the parking lot of the apartment complex. Officers contacted the adult male driver and the adult female passenger. The passenger was positively identified as Shawnaly. When one of the officers asked Shawnaly to step out of the GMC, she dropped a small baggie of meth onto the passenger seat.
Shawnaly was arrested and transported to the Anchorage Police Department for questioning by detectives. Afterwards she was remanded at Hiland Correctional on the charges of Misconduct Involving a Controlled Substance V, Forgery III, Violate Conditions of Release, Forgery II, and Falsify Business Records.
No one has been charged for the burglary that occurred on Arctic Boulevard in February; that investigation is ongoing.
Anchorage Police are grateful to the bank employee who verified the paperwork presented to them in this transaction. Due to their diligence, a fraudulent act was stopped, and another business did not become a check fraud victim.
