Sonja Mataafa Charged in Pine Street Shooting Investigation

Update on 9/27/23:

On September 26, 2023, Anchorage Police received a tip that Sonja Mataafa was at a residence on the 400-block of Flower Street.  Officers responded to the address at 11:19 PM.  They set up a perimeter and attempted contact with the people inside the apartment.  43-year-old Tony T. Jameson spoke with police through the door.  Jameson denied Sonja Mataafa was inside and he refused to open the door.  Jameson was given a hindering warning which he ignored.  Officers obtained a search warrant for the residence, and then gave additional warnings for the occupants to come out along with hindering warnings.   Eventually four people emerged to include Sonja Mataafa.

After being transported to the Anchorage Police Department for an interview with detectives, Sonja Mataafa was remanded on her felony warrant for the shooting that occurred on September 19th.

Tony Jameson was remanded at the Anchorage Jail on an existing warrant and for the charge of Hindering.  27-year-old Kathleen A. Smith was remanded at Hiland Correctional for the charge of Hindering.  25-year-old Momoi Mataafa was remanded at Hiland Correctional on two unrelated misdemeanor warrants along with a new charge of Hindering.

Among the items seized for evidence during the subsequent search of the apartment was a handgun that had been reported as stolen to police on July 27, 2023.  The gun had been taken during a burglary to a storage warehouse in Anchorage.

At 7:58 PM on September 19, 2023, Anchorage Police responded to the 500-block of N Pine Street regarding a shooting.  Initial indications are that 32-year-old Sonja S. Mataafa and another adult female had some type of interaction outside during which Mataafa produced a handgun and fired at least once, striking the other woman one time in the lower body.   The victim was transported to a hospital for treatment of the non-life-threatening wound.

Sonja Mataafa fled the scene prior to officer arrival; efforts to locate her thus far have been unsuccessful.  Detectives have obtained a felony warrant for her arrest for the charges of Assault I, two counts of Assault III, and three counts of Reckless Endangerment.  Mataafa is 5’04” tall, 160 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.  She is believed to be armed; do not approach her.  Anyone with information regarding her whereabouts is asked to call APD Dispatch at 3-1-1 (option #1) or 907-786-8900 (press “0”).  To remain anonymous, you may leave a tip online at www.AnchorageCrimeStoppers.com.

It appears the victim and suspect were known to one another.  The motive for the shooting is still under investigation.
