Jacquelyn Mercado arrested; SWAT response on the 5100-block of Chena Avenue

Update on 11/1/22 at 7:25 AM:

At 6:41 PM on October 31, 2022, Anchorage Police swing shift officers responded to a residence on the 5100-block of Chena Avenue to serve a felony warrant on 62-year-old Jacquelyn D. Mercado.  Mercado was uncooperative and threatened to self-harm with a handgun; SWAT arrived at the scene.  Prior to being taken into custody, Mercado also threatened to shoot another person.

Eventually Mercado exited the home through the front door; she was taken into custody by SWAT at 11:31 PM.  Mercado was transported to Hiland Correctional and remanded on two felony warrants.  Mercado’s existing felony warrant was for Burglary I, Theft II, Theft IV, Assault IV and Resisting. Due to her actions the evening of October 31st, a second felony warrant was obtained for her arrest for the charges of Assault III, Terroristic Threats II, and Resisting Arrest.

Anchorage Police are grateful for the cooperation of area residents while they worked the scene.

APD Special Operations has the barricaded subject safely in custody and SWAT, CNT, TSU and Patrol have cleared the scene.  All roads around this location are reopened and the area can return to regular activities.

APD Special Operations has responded to the scene in reference to a barricaded subject. That work unit includes the Special Weapons and Tactics Unit (SWAT), the Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT), and the Tactical Support Unit (TSU). Depending on the actions of the suspect, our response may require using a variety of tactics and tools. This could also involve the deploying of gas; nearby citizens with respiratory illnesses/sensitivities should remain inside and make sure doors and windows are closed.
 
Chena Avenue remains closed between Fireoved Road and Davis Street. Please follow officers’ instructions if you are in the area to include evacuation of your home if necessary. If you do not need to be in the vicinity, avoid it and seek alternative routes until further notice.
 
We ask both the public and the media to refrain from posting/publishing photos and/or video of the scene until the situation is over. Showing tactical positions and movements in these types of situations can put the public and officers’ safety at risk.

There is a large police presence on the 5100-block of Chena Avenue for an ongoing investigation.
 
Chena Avenue is closed between Fireoved Drive and Davis Street. Please avoid the area and follow the officers’ instructions if you need to be in the vicinity.
 
Depending on the situation, our response may require using a variety of tactics and tools, to include the drone.
