Update at 3:40 PM:

At 6:40 AM on August 9, 2024, Anchorage Police responded to 28065 Seward Highway after receiving a report of a physical altercation in the Chugach State Park Indian Creek parking lot. It was reported the incident involved an adult male and an adult female outside of a motorhome. When officers arrived at the scene, they contacted the occupants of the motorhome; the female victim emerged from the vehicle, while the male remained inside.

During the investigation, officers learned the female victim had been physically assaulted before officers arrived. The male, identified as 36-year-old Jeffery Michael Vincent Greene, remained inside the vehicle, and refused to come out. Once APD Special Operations arrived on scene, Negotiators contacted Greene over the phone, but when Greene would not exit the motorhome, APD’s SWAT team deployed gas into the vehicle. Ultimately, Greene emerged and was apprehended by K9 Rylin and taken into custody by APD officers without incident. Greene was transported to a hospital for treatment of injuries sustained from the dog bite and gas exposure.

Jeffery Michael Vincent Greene is facing charges of Assault II, Assault III, Assault IV, and Kidnapping.

Officers are breaking down the perimeter but there is still a large police presence in the Indian area near the Seward Highway. The highway is now open in both directions. Thank you for your patience.

APD Special Operations has responded to the area. That work unit includes the Special Weapons and Tactics Unit (SWAT), the Tactical Support Unit (TSU), the Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT), and/or the Mobile Intervention Team (MIT). Depending on the actions of the suspect, our response may require using a variety of tactics and tools (to include the drone) to apprehend him. This could also involve the deploying of chemical agents; nearby citizens with respiratory illnesses/sensitivities should remain inside and make sure doors and windows are closed.

Please follow officers’ instructions if you are in the area. If you do not need to be in the vicinity, avoid it and seek alternative routes until further notice.

We ask both the public and the media to refrain from posting/publishing photos and/or video of the scene until the situation is over. Showing tactical positions and movements in these types of situations can put the public and officers’ safety at risk.

Beginning at 9:25 AM, the Seward Highway will be closed intermittently while emergency vehicles respond.

We appreciate the community's cooperation and understanding during our response, and we will keep you informed of any new developments.
