Teenaged Juveniles Charged in Robbery and Stolen Vehicle Investigations
At 10:44 AM on June 12, 2024, a white 2019 Kia Rio was reported as stolen to APD. The vehicle had been parked outside a residence on the 500-block of Mumford Street at the time it was taken.
Later that same day, at 5:12 PM, Anchorage Police were notified of an attempted robbery of two teenaged female juveniles at gunpoint by a group of males in a white Kia. The information relayed to APD Dispatch was the two victims were walking near E 12th Avenue and Nelchina Street when the men drove up in a vehicle, pointed guns at them, and demanded the girls empty their pockets. The victims didn’t have anything on them; the suspects drove off without taking anything. There were no injuries.
At 5:46 PM APD Dispatch received a REDDI complaint from a citizen regarding a white Kia being driven recklessly near N Bragaw Street and Richmond Avenue. The caller provided a license plate which matched that of the Kia reported stolen that morning. Due to the information known by police at that time, initial indications were that the reckless Kia may be the same one involved in the attempted robbery.
Both swing shift patrol officers and officers assigned to the Investigative Support Unit (ISU) searched for the vehicle and ultimately located it near Industrial Way and Commercial Drive. Officers initiated a traffic stop which the Kia’s driver failed to yield for. The suspect continued driving recklessly at which time the patrol officers terminated the pursuit. Several patrol officers set up a perimeter around the Mountain View Neighborhood while ISU continued to look for the Kia.
The occupied vehicle was located on the east end of Parsons Avenue. ISU blocked in the Kia with their vehicles. Passenger Male #1 stayed with the Kia, was taken into custody, and transported to the Anchorage Police Department. Passenger Male #2 and Driver Male #3 bailed and fled on foot in separate directions. JBER police were notified, and they assisted in the suspect search. An extensive track was conducted with APD K9.
At 8:05 PM a swing shift sergeant saw Male #2 walking near Commercial Drive and Reeve Boulevard. He was detained and transported to the Anchorage Police Department for questioning by detectives. At 1:52 AM on June 13th, Male #3 was located at a residence by mid-shift patrol officers who had responded to an unrelated call; he was taken into custody. Also located at the residence was another juvenile who had unrelated outstanding warrants. He was arrested on those warrants.
At the conclusion of the detectives’ interviews, Juvenile Males #1, #2, and #3 were all remanded at the McLaughlin Youth Center (MYC); charges were forwarded to the Division of Juvenile Justice.
Several items were seized as evidence through the course of this investigation to include firearms. One of those was a handgun that was reported as stolen to APD over 22 years ago on May 28, 2002. A second seized handgun had been reported as stolen on July 8, 2018. That gun had been inside a Chevy pickup which had been stolen from a business parking lot. The truck was recovered three days later by APD, but the gun was not inside.
