Timothy Hayes Arrested In Burglary Investigation

At 1:25 PM on September 11, 2023, Anchorage Police responded to the 200-block of W 14th Avenue regarding a residential burglary in progress.  As officers were approaching the location, they were advised the adult male suspect had fled through a rear window.  A physical description of the suspect was aired over the radio.

One of the first responding officers saw a male, matching the suspect’s description, walking northbound on C Street while carrying a box in his hands. The uniformed officer, who had his patrol vehicle’s emergency lights activated, pulled over and exited his car.  The officer gave 38-year-old Timothy J. Hayes instructions which Hayes followed.  Hayes briefly resisted during the handcuffing process but ultimately complied.

After Hayes was confirmed as the burglary suspect he was transported to the Anchorage Jail.  During processing, Correctional Officers located oxycodone and fentanyl power on his person.  Hayes was remanded on the charges of Criminal Mischief V, Assault III, Theft II, two counts of Misconduct Involving a Controlled Substance IV, two counts of Criminal Mischief III, three counts of Assault IV, and Robbery I.

Initial indications are that Hayes caused damage to a total of three apartments in the complex.  Regarding the first apartment, Hayes kicked the window from the outside causing the frame to bend so that the window could no longer close properly.  The tenant of that apartment was home at the time.  Regarding the second apartment, Hayes forced his way through the locked front door rendering the door broken and useless.  Hayes entered and physically assaulted the adult male tenant.  The tenant was able to fight Hayes off and escape.  Hayes left with several items he had stolen from the second apartment.  Regarding the third apartment, Hayes forced entry through the locked front door leaving the door broken and not securable.  The tenant of the third apartment was not at home at the time.

At one point during the crime spree, Hayes chased two tenants from the complex out into the parking lot.  The tenants were able to get into their BMW and lock the doors.  Hayes proceeded to kick and punch the car causing visible damage.  Hayes attempted to prevent the couple from driving away by hanging onto the car.  The victims were able to leave.

Hayes does not live at the apartment complex, and why he was there is still under investigation.  There is no indication he was known to any of his victims.
