23-Year-Old Matthew Davis Arrested for DUI and Manslaughter

On August 31, 2022, an Anchorage Grand Jury returned true bill on the driver involved in this fatal collision.
23-year-old Matthew Davis, the driver of the Toyota Tacoma, was charged with 2 counts of Murder, 2 counts of Manslaughter, Driving Under the Influence and Leaving the Scene of an Accident.

The victims have been identified as 18-year-old Amelia Nowak and 20-year-old Derek Duerr.
Next of kin procedures have been completed.

The driver of the Tacoma, 23-year-old Matthew Davis, was transported to a local hospital where he was treated for minor injuries. Davis was also evaluated for his appearance and it was determined he was under the influence of a controlled substance. Once medically cleared, Davis was remanded to the Anchorage Jail where he was remanded for DUI and Manslaughter.
The victims’ names will be released once next of kin procedures have been completed.

At 01:49 AM on August 21, 2022, Officers with the Mid-Shift Patrol and medics and firefighters with the Anchorage Fire Department responded to the intersection of E 15th Avenue and Cordova Street to a vehicle collision with injuries.
The preliminary investigation indicates that a Toyota Tacoma was involved in a collision with a Toyota Corolla near 6th Avenue and Cordova Street. The adult male driver, and sole occupant, of the Corolla was not injured. Witnesses report that the driver of the Tacoma then left the scene, traveling southbound on Cordova. The Tacoma then collided with another vehicle, which was stopped at the intersection of E 15th Avenue and Cordova Street. The impact of the collision caused the vehicle to hit a tree and catch on fire. The driver and the passenger of the vehicle were both declared deceased at the scene. The victims’ names will be released once next of kin procedures have been completed.
The Tacoma continued to travel Southbound and struck a Dodge Ram that was Northbound at the light. The adult female driver of the Dodge Ram received no injuries.
The adult male driver of the Toyota Tacoma was transported by medics with the Anchorage Fire Department to a local area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. No charges have been filed at this time.
Please expect closures and delays for the next several hours while investigators with the Major Collision Investigation Unit process the scene. The circumstances of the collision are still under investigation. Anyone with information regarding this incident, that have not already spoken to the police, is asked to call Police Dispatch at 3-1-1 (Option 1).
