At 4:20 PM on January 4, 2022, a 2010 blue Honda CRV was reported as stolen to APD.  The unlocked vehicle, which had been left running with the keys inside, was parked in front of a residence on the 4100-block of Debarr Road at the time of the theft. 

A few hours later, at 7:21 PM, a swing shift officer saw the stolen Honda parked in a business parking lot on the 5000-block of Taku Drive.  The officer kept eyes on the vehicle, which initially appeared to be unoccupied, while waiting for backup units to arrive.  When other officers were on scene, they used their patrol vehicles to block in the Honda.  Once the block was in place, the initiating officer turned on his police vehicle’s emergency lights.  As soon as the lights illuminated, an adult male abruptly popped up, exited from the driver’s seat of the Honda, and fled on foot.  Officers gave chase while issuing K9 warnings.  The suspect, later identified as 19-year-old Craig E. Falemai, ignored the warnings and continued to run.  K9 Midas was deployed.  Midas contacted Falemai’s arm; Falemai continued to physically resist.  Falemai was escorted to the ground where he was subsequently handcuffed.

 Falemai was transported to the hospital for treatment of the dog bite.  After being interviewed by detectives at the Anchorage Police Department, he was remanded at the Anchorage Jail on two outstanding warrants (one felony for Theft II and one misdemeanor for Trespass and Criminal Mischief).  He was additionally charged with Resisting, Vehicle Theft I, and Theft II.
