Fatality Investigation near the New Seward Highway and Fireweed Lane
Update on 8/1/23:
Through the investigation it has been determined that both 41-year-old Iris George, and an adult male, walked eastbound (not westbound as previously reported) across the southbound lanes of the New Seward Highway north of the intersection with Fireweed Lane. The male pedestrian crossed first and made it across the street to the center median. Iris George was walking several feet behind him when she was struck by a southbound SUV. She was transported to a hospital where she subsequently succumbed to her injuries.
Neither pedestrian was in a crosswalk at the time of the collision.
Next-of-kin notification procedures have been completed.
Original on 7/30/23:
At 6:24 PM on July 30, 2023, Anchorage Police responded to a vehicle versus pedestrian collision. Initial indications are that an adult female pedestrian was crossing westbound across the southbound lanes of the New Seward Highway, north of the intersection with Fireweed Lane (not in a crosswalk), when she was struck by a green Nissan SUV travelling southbound. The victim was transported to a hospital where she was declared deceased a short time later.
The adult male driver stayed at the scene and has been cooperative with police. The investigation is ongoing; no charges have been filed.
The Major Collision Investigation Unit (MCIU) has responded. Southbound New Seward, between 15th Avenue and Fireweed Lane, will be closed while they work the collision site.
The victim’s name will be released once next-of-kin notification procedures have been completed.
