Homicide; West of the Sullivan Arena and Mulcahy Ball Fields

Update:
The deceased victim has been identified as Thomas Williams (18 years old). Next of kin notification procedures have been completed.

Update 6/5/19 8:54 a.m.:
Detectives have arrested the 12-year-old male suspect. He was transported to McLaughlin Youth Center. Charges have been forwarded to the Department of Juvenile Justice.

The person of interest was questioned by detectives and released.

Update 6/4/19 5:21 p.m.:
Detectives have located LaShawna Nettles and the juvenile male suspect.

The suspect is in-custody.

Both are being questioned by detectives.

Update 6/4/19 3:45 p.m.:
Detectives need the public’s help in locating LaShawna Nettles (45 years old). She is a person of interest in this investigation. They believe she has information about this investigation and want to speak with her.

LaShawna is 5’4” tall and 230 pounds. She has brown hair and brown eyes. Please see attached photo.

Update 6/3/19 2:48 p.m.
The preliminary investigation found that there was an altercation between a group of juveniles that started in the area of the sports fields near the Sullivan Arena and ended in the woods near the Chester Creek Trail. The suspect shot the victims in the woods and fled on foot.

The deceased victim is an adult, not a juvenile. He was 18 years old. His identity isn’t being released at this time pending next of kin notification procedures.

Detectives are aggressively working on identifying and locating the suspect. There is no additional information to release at this time.

Original 6/2/18 8:01p.m.:
Around 6:25 p.m., Dispatch received a report of shots fired in the Chester Creek Trail area near Sullivan Arena. A short time later, Dispatch received a report from someone saying they had been shot in the woods.

Officers with the Patrol Division determined the calls were related and began searching the area. They located two juvenile males in the woods far off the trail system. Both were shot multiple times. One victim was deceased, and one victim was transported to a local hospital with life threatening injuries.

Detectives with the Homicide Unit and Officers with the Crime Scene Team are headed to the scene. Trail access at 20th Avenue and C Street is closed due to the investigation. Please avoid the area.
