K9 Hank apprehended Kaylianne Shreve in a weapons offense investigation

At 7:24PM on March 20, 2022, Anchorage Police responded to the Spenard Hostel at 2845 W 42nd Avenue regarding a trespasser.  The caller relayed to APD Dispatch that 29-year-old Kaylianne M. Shreve had been given until 7PM that day to vacate the property.  After Shreve exited through the front doors, she got into a verbal altercation with another hostel resident.  Shreve pulled a handgun from her person and pointed it at the man which put him in fear for his life.  The male resident quickly ran inside the hostel while Shreve left the area on foot. A computer check confirmed that Shreve is a convicted felon and therefore not allowed to be in possession of a handgun.

At 7:57 PM responding officers found Shreve sitting on a bench near Spenard Road and Turnagain Boulevard.  When officers contacted Shreve, she was uncooperative and refused to comply with their commands.  A crisis negotiation trained officer (CNT) responded to the scene and attempted to convince Shreve to become compliant. In doing so, the CNT officer gave Shreve multiple less-lethal warnings which Shreve ignored.

Shreve began putting her hands inside her coat; officers were concerned she was reaching for the weapon she was seen with earlier. An officer deployed a pepper ball at the same time K9 Hank was released to apprehend Shreve.  The pepper ball impacted Shreve while K9 Hank contacted Shreve’s arm.  As K9 Hank was taking Shreve to the ground, a handgun fell from her coat.  Shreve was taken into custody without further incident.

Shreve was transported to the hospital where she received treatment for the pepper ball exposure along with the dog bite.  Afterwards she was remanded at Hiland Correctional on the charges of Assault III, Misconduct Involving a Weapon III – Felon in Possession, Misconduct Involving a Weapon V – Fail to Inform, and Resisting.
