Rosalyn Bennett and Kaylene Adams arrested in stolen vehicle investigation
At 10:25 AM on May 22, 2022, a 2006 gray Ford Taurus was reported as stolen to APD. The vehicle had been parked on the street near 8th Avenue and I Street while the owner’s family member was at work in a nearby business. The family member had left her purse in an employee only area within the building; however, the room was not secure and therefore accessible by the public. Sometime during the family member’s shift, someone stole the car keys from her purse and subsequently took the vehicle.
At 3:20 AM on May 25, 2022, a mid-shift patrol officer saw the stolen Ford being driven through the intersection of Tudor Road and A Street. The officer got a good look at the female driver, later identified as 19-year-old Rosalyn N. Bennett. The officer had to turn around in traffic and catch up to the stolen Taurus. The officer witnessed Rosalyn run a stop sign at W 13th Avenue and B Street at which time the officer initiated a traffic stop by activating his patrol vehicle’s siren and overhead emergency lights. Rosalyn did not yield, and instead turned onto W 12th Avenue which terminates into a dead end. Rosalyn drove up over the grassy curb, got back onto A Street, and then proceeded to drive the wrong way down the road. The officer terminated the pursuit and aired a locate over the radio.
A short time later, at 4:02 AM, the same officer saw the stolen vehicle parked in a business parking lot at Spenard Road and Minnesota Drive. The officer could see a different person in the driver’s seat, later identified as 24-year-old Kaylene K. Adams, and he also observed Rosalyn to be occupying the front passenger seat. Kaylene drove the stolen Ford out of the parking lot; the officer followed at a distance while waiting for backup units to arrive.
When Kaylene drove into a parking lot near Spenard Road and W 27th Avenue, the officer also drove into the lot and activated his emergency lights. As the officer attempted to block the Ford from exiting the lot, Kaylene purposely drove into the patrol car. The officer was able to pin the stolen Ford up against a fence. Kaylene exited the driver’s seat and fled on foot. The officer gave chase and caught her a short distance away. Kaylene was escorted to the ground; a second officer arrived and the handcuffs were applied without further incident.
While officers were arresting Kaylene, Rosalyn crawled into the Ford’s driver’s seat from the passenger seat and attempted to drive away. Another officer had arrived and blocked in the Ford from the front which prevented Rosalyn from driving. Rosalyn then complied with officers’ commands, exited the Ford, and was taken into custody. Both women were transported to the Anchorage Police Department for questioning by detectives.
Rosalyn Bennett was remanded at Hiland Correctional on her outstanding felony warrant related to previous charges of Misconduct Involving a Controlled Substance V and Escape III. She was additionally charged with Vehicle Theft I, Fail to Stop, and Theft II.
24-year-old Kaylene K. Adams was remanded at Hiland Correctional on the charges of Resisting, Vehicle Theft I, Fail to Stop, and Theft II.
There were no injuries.
