Shooting Investigation at Creekside Park

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – A federal grand jury in Alaska returned an indictment charging an Anchorage man with being a felon in possession of a firearm during an encounter with the police.
According to court documents and a press release from the Anchorage Police Department (APD), on Sept. 23, 2024, Jalen Baker, 23, possessed a firearm during an encounter with police.
The release alleges APD officers responded to a shooting in Anchorage where two victims were shot. Officers located the shooting suspect in a nearby trailer home park. The suspect fired at responding officers, striking one in the lower body, and barricaded himself inside a trailer home.
The investigation identified the suspect as Baker and he was taken into custody at the scene. At the time of the event, Baker had a prior felony conviction for assault in the State of Alaska in 2022.
Baker is charged with one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm and one count of possession of a firearm at a school zone. The defendant will make his initial court appearance on a later date before a U.S. Magistrate Judge from the U.S. District Court for the District of Alaska. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
U.S. Attorney S. Lane Tucker for the District of Alaska, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Seattle Field Division Special Agent in Charge Jonathan Blais and Anchorage Police Chief Sean Case made the announcement.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and Anchorage Police Department, with assistance from the Alaska State Troopers, are investigating the case.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Cody Tirpak is prosecuting the case.
Update on 9/24/24:
As a result of a joint operation with the Alaska State Troopers, 23-year-old Jalen J. Baker was taken into custody and has been remanded at the Anchorage Correctional Complex on the charges of three counts of Assault 1, one count of Assault 3, Misconduct Involving a Weapon 2, Misconduct Involving a Weapon 3, and Reckless Endangerment. The motive regarding the shooting is still under investigation. This is believed to be an isolated incident.
Update at 5:30 PM on 9/23/24:
The suspect has been taken into custody. There will be a continued police presence in the area while the Crime Scene Team processes the site.
The suspect will be transported to the Anchorage Police Department for questioning by detectives.
Update at 5:15 PM on 9/23/24:
At 11:23 AM on September 23, 2024, Anchorage Police Day Shift Patrol Officers responded to the parking lot of Creekside Park at 7122 E 6th Avenue regarding a shooting. Officers located an adult male and adult female, both with at least one gunshot wound to the upper body. Both were transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
With the help of citizen witnesses, officers located the suspect in a nearby trailer home park on the 700-block of Muldoon Road. The adult male suspect fired at police, striking an officer in the lower body. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The officer’s family has been contacted.
APD SWAT, The Alaska State Trooper’s Southcentral SWAT, and the Alaska Department of Public Safety’s HELO3 are assisting in the investigation. The suspect has not yet been apprehended; he is still barricaded inside a trailer home. Law enforcement continue to work the scene.
APD Police Officers assigned to the School Resource Unit worked with the Anchorage School District to assist the area schools affected by the investigation. Those schools include Bartlett High School, Creekside Elementary School, and Muldoon Elementary School.
Update at 2:45 PM on 9/23/24:
Northbound Muldoon Road, between E 11th and E 6th Avenue, is shut down. Please avoid the area.
Update at 1:55 PM on 9/23/24:
Due to the ongoing assault investigation, access to Muldoon Elementary School is not possible from E 6th. If you are going to the school, please travel eastbound on Duben Avenue, to Southbound Bolin Street, to westbound E 4th Avenue, to southbound Cherry Street.
Please follow any instructions about each school's status released by the Anchorage School District.

Anchorage Police are investigating an assault. There is a large police presence in Muldoon; a drone is being utilized.
