Thanks to a citizen witness, Razak Sulemana was located and charged for an OUI Hit and Run Collision

At 6:22 PM on February 9, 2022, a swing shift patrol officer saw a 2016 black Jeep Grand Cherokee collide with a 2003 white Ford sedan in the intersection of E International Airport Road and A Street.  The Jeep spun around on the roadway and then the driver immediately drove northbound on A Street.  The officer aired a locate for the suspect vehicle and its direction of travel, and then stopped and contacted the driver of the white sedan; that driver was not injured.  While the officer was speaking with the sedan’s driver, a witness pulled up and told the officer he saw where the Jeep’s driver had gone to.

Police went to a hotel on the 5000-block of A Street and located the unoccupied Jeep in the parking lot.  The officers went into the motel, learned which room the Jeep’s driver was in, and then knocked on the motel room door.  39-year-old Razak Sulemana answered the door.  While speaking with Razak, officers noticed several signs of impairment.  Officers confirmed Razak was the driver of the Jeep during the collision.  After administering Standardized Field Sobriety Tests (SFSTs), the decision was made to charge Razak with Operating under the Influence.

Razak was transported to the Anchorage Jail for processing where he provided a breath sample that showed his breath alcohol content was more than three times the legal limit.  Razak was remanded for Felony OUI (three or more offenses in ten years) and Leaving the Scene of an Accident.  He was issued a citation for Fail to Yield the Right of Way.

Anchorage Police are grateful to the citizen witness who got involved and ultimately helped officers take a dangerous driver off the streets.
