Traffic Investigation – 22221 Birchwood Loop Road

Update on 8/2/23:

When officers arrived at the scene in the area of N Birchwood Loop Road and Steffes Street, they contacted 50-year-old Stephanie M. Schubert who had been driving the involved blue Buick SUV.  While interacting with Schubert, officers noticed signs of impairment.  After administering Standardized Field Sobriety Tests (SFSTs), the decision was made to charge Schubert with Driving under the Influence.

Schubert was transported to the Anchorage Jail for further processing.  While there, Schubert provided a breath sample which showed her breath alcohol content was zero.  Subsequent to securing a search warrant, Schubert’s blood was drawn.

Schubert was remanded at Hiland Correctional on the charges of DUI (suspected narcotics) and felony Assault I.

At 6:16 PM on August 1, 2023, Anchorage Police responded to 22221 Birchwood Loop Road regarding a vehicle collision.  Initial indications are that an SUV being driven eastbound (towards the Glenn Highway) on Birchwood Loop Road crossed the center line and struck a motorcyclist traveling in the opposite direction.  The adult male was thrown from the motorcycle; he was transported to the hospital with what are believed to be life-threatening injuries.

The SUV’s adult female driver stayed at the scene and is being cooperative with the investigation.  The Major Collision Investigation Unit (MCIU) responded to process the crash site.  Birchwood Loop was shut down but is expected to be re-opened shortly.
