Victim Identified in New Seward Hwy Vehicle Vs. Bicycle Fatality

The victim has been identified as 72-year-old Josef Kopecky.

On November 01, 2022 at 12:40 PM, Anchorage Police and medics with the Anchorage Fire Department responded to the northbound onramp at Tudor Road that connects to the New Seward Highway in reference to a vehicle versus bicyclist collision.

The preliminary investigation found that a Subaru Legacy was traveling northbound on the onramp and collided with an adult male bicyclist, who was also traveling northbound on the onramp. The adult male bicyclist was declared deceased at the scene. The area will remain closed while investigators with the Major Collision Investigation Unit (MCIU) process the scene. Please use alternative routes.

The driver remained on scene and is cooperating with the investigation. No charges have been filed at this time.

The victim’s identity will be released once next-of-kin notification procedures have been completed.
