Ahveon Gonzales and Leapyear Mafi Arrested During Stolen Vehicle Investigation

At 11:19 AM on September 16, 2024, a black 2008 Dodge Charger was reported as stolen to APD.  The unoccupied vehicle was parked outside a residence on the 1300-block of Denali Street at the time of the theft.

Over six hours later, at 5:39 PM, a swing shift patrol officer spotted the stolen vehicle traveling eastbound on E 5th Avenue just prior to Reeve Circle.  Once backup units arrived, to include an Alaska State Trooper, a traffic stop was conducted on the Dodge when it stopped for the red light at Commercial Drive and Taylor Street.  Officers blocked the Dodge in with their patrol vehicles and then called out the three occupants.  All were compliant; they were detained and transported to the Anchorage Police Department for questioning by detectives.

While the interviews were being conducted, the Dodge was searched with permission of the registered owner.  Drugs were located inside to include suspected fentanyl pills and a baggie containing residue that field-tested positive for methamphetamine.

The driver, 20-year-old Ahveon D. M. Gonzales, was remanded at Hiland Mountain Correctional Center on an existing felony warrant for the charges of Vehicle Theft in the First Degree, Theft in the Second Degree, and Assault in the Third Degree.  She was additionally charged with Vehicle Theft in the First Degree, Theft in the Second Degree, and Misconduct Involving a Controlled Substance in the Fifth Degree.

One of the passengers, 28-year-old Leapyear T. Mafi, was remanded at the Anchorage Correctional Complex on an unrelated existing felony warrant for Larceny.

The third occupant of the Dodge was not charged.
