Kalyn Houser charged in DUI hit-and-run collision
At 12:21 AM on September 26, 2022, Anchorage Police responded to the area near Fred Meyer at 2000 W Dimond Boulevard regarding a single vehicle rollover crash. As officers were responding they were advised the driver was leaving the area on foot. Citizen callers provided Dispatch with the license plate of the vehicle involved which allowed Dispatch to locate the registered owner’s name and address. Some officers responded to the crash site while others responded to the 8900-block of Blackberry Street which is where the involved Buick Lacrosse was registered to. Citizen callers also gave a physical description of the adult female driver.
Officers confirmed the suspect was not at the Blackberry Street address. After the officers left, a nearby resident called Dispatch to report an intoxicated female was outside causing a disturbance. Officers returned and located 24-year-old Kalyn M. Houser standing outside and being very loud. Kalyn walked away as officers approached even though she was given commands to stop. Kalyn walked up on a porch where officers verbally engaged with her. Once it was determined Kalyn was the registered owner of the Buick, officers attempted to place her into handcuffs. Kalyn physically resisted; she kicked one of the officers which caused him pain. Kalyn was escorted to the ground and given a restraints warning. Officers helped Kalyn back to her feet and began walking her towards the rear of a patrol car. Once seated in the back, Kalyn began kicking. Kalyn was removed from the patrol car, placed into total restraints, and then placed back into the car. After several moments Kalyn calmed down and the restraints were removed. The restraints were put back on when Kalyn resumed kicking at an officer.
Subsequent to confirming Kalyn was the driver of the Buick, the decision was made to charge Kalyn with Driving under the Influence. Kalyn was transported to the Anchorage Jail for further processing. During that time Kalyn continued to be uncooperative and vulgar with her speech. Eventually Kalyn provided a breath sample showing her breath alcohol content was almost two and a half times the legal limit. Prior to remand, Kalyn was taken to a hospital for medical clearance due to minor injuries she may have sustained in the rollover collision. She was combative with medical personnel; Kalyn was placed into full soft medical restraints while medical staff completed their examination. Ultimately Kalyn was remanded at Hiland Correctional on the charges of Leaving the Scene of an Accident, Resisting, Assault IV, DUI, and two counts of Criminal Mischief III.
Officers located Kalyn’s wrecked Buick. Initial indications are that somewhere near the southeast entrance to the business parking lot at 2203 W Dimond Boulevard, the Buick was driven west on the greenbelt on the north side of W Dimond Boulevard. The Buick struck a telephone box, a small pole, uprooted multiple bushes and trees, hit a parking embankment, launched off that embankment, and landed approximately 25 yards into the parking lot south of 2203 W Dimond Boulevard.
Anchorage Police are grateful for the citizen witnesses who called police, stayed at the scene, and provided statements of what they saw. No injuries to bystanders were reported.
