Officer involved shooting investigation; E 16th Avenue/A Street
Update:
The four officers who returned fire toward the suspect have been identified:
Officer Steven Amnatkeolee. He's been a member of APD for 4 years.
Officer Brandon Schafer. He's been a member of APD for 8 months.
Officer Kyle Haskins. He's been a member of APD for 2 years.
Officer Matthew Choate. He's been a member of APD for 1 year.
Update 3/8/19 1:22 p.m.:
Next of kin procedures are complete.
The suspect has been identified as Dylan Aikey (23 years old).
This investigation is ongoing.
Update 3/7/19 12:30 p.m.:
Additional information from the preliminary investigation found that the first officer arrived on the scene around 2:13 a.m. and three additional officers arrived within the next few minutes. They spoke to the witness who stated the suspect fled. They began investigating the scene and spotted the suspect in the area. They gave verbal commands for the suspect to stop. He refused and continued running. The officers pursued on foot. During this time, the suspect fired at the officers and they returned fire. The suspect was shot multiple times. Officers began to render aid until members of the Anchorage Fire Department arrived. They located the suspect’s gun and evidence of it being fired. The suspect was transported to a local hospital where he was declared dead.
No officers were injured. No citizens were injured.
The suspect’s identity isn’t being released at this time pending next of kin notification procedures.
The four officers involved have been placed on mandatory administrative leave. Their names will be released in 72 hours per protocol.
The case will be given to the Office of Special Prosecution for review. An Internal Affairs investigation will be conducted as well. Crime scene and homicide investigators are assisting with this investigation.

The Crime Scene Team and Homicide Detectives have been called out to assist with this ongoing investigation.
Anchorage Police Chief Justin Doll will hold a 9:00 a.m. press conference at Police Headquarters (4501 Elmore Road) to discuss additional details.
Original 3/7/19 at 3:28 a.m.:
On 3/7/19 at 2:11 a.m., Officers with the Patrol Division responded to the area of E 16th Avenue and Columbine Street in reference to a report of a vehicle prowler.
The preliminary investigation found that as officers arrived in the area, they located one adult male suspect. During the incident shots were fired; the suspect was transported to a local hospital with life threatening injuries and was pronounced deceased at 2:45 a.m. No officers were seriously injured.
