Traffic Collision Investigation at the O’Malley/New Seward Intersection

At 7:38 AM on August 29, 2023, Anchorage Police responded to a multi-vehicle collision at the intersection of O’Malley Road and the New Seward Highway.  Initial indications are that a box truck was travelling southbound on the off ramp from southbound Seward onto O’Malley, when he proceeded through the intersection on a red light.  The truck struck a Toyota Tacoma and a Honda Accord that were travelling in the westbound lanes on O’Malley.  The box truck continued straight through the intersection, and then struck a Jeep Grand Wagoneer and a Nissan Sentra travelling in the eastbound lanes of O’Malley.  The box truck caught fire upon impact with the eastbound vehicles.

A total of five people were transported to area hospitals for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.  It is still being determined which vehicle each of those transported people had been in when the crash occurred.

The Major Collision Investigation Unit (MCIU) has responded to process the scene.  The entire intersection is shut down and is expected to remain so until sometime this afternoon.  The cause of the crash is still under investigation and no charges/citations have been filed.
